Winners of Irish Journalism Awards Announced

The winners of the 2024 Irish Journalism Awards, in association with Newsbrands Ireland, and supported by Google News Initiative, were announced at an awards luncheon at the Round Room in Dublin’s Mansion House on Wednesday, 13 November.

The industry awards were hosted by broadcaster Matt Cooper with members of the Journalism Awards independent judging panel announcing the winners.  Entry to the awards was open to any work published in print, online, video, or audio from national newspapers or digital news members of The Press Council of Ireland with a focus on national/ international news.

Special Guest at the Awards An Tanáiste Michéal Martin, said:I value what you do very highly. I hope I’ve also demonstrated that in Government, with our decision to zero-rate VAT on newspapers and digital publications. I want to acknowledge the work that Newsbrands Ireland did in highlighting and supporting that policy. We also introduced the Defamation Bill …. As you know, this legislation will radically reform our defamation laws at a time when they are increasingly being used to intimidate journalists, media outlets and indeed political opponents…. Unfortunately, we ran out of time in the last Dáil before it was passed, but for me it remains a priority. Therefore, my party is giving a clear commitment to restore the Defamation Bill in full to the Order Paper at Committee Stage and pass it within three months.”

Speaking about the awards Ann Marie Lenihan, CEO of Newsbrands said: “NewsBrands is proud to support the Irish Journalism Awards. This year’s shortlist showcases the dynamism of contemporary Irish journalism across various platforms – journalism that s brave, insightful, engaging, and above all truthful. We commend the talented journalists, editorial teams, and news publishers, who remain dedicated to investing in and supporting high quality journalism that drives positive change in our world.”

Google News Initiative continues in 2024 as the awards Gold Sponsor. In addition, Business Plus sponsor Business Journalist of the Year, Amazon sponsor News Reporter, and Owens DDB and Paddy Power join as Patrons of the awards.

Addressing the Awards on behalf of Google, Katya Degrieck, Director, Northern Europe, Emerging Markets & Channel Partnerships for Sellside EMEA, commented:  “The Google News Initiative is thrilled to partner with the Irish Journalism Awards once again to celebrate the essential work of journalism. Ireland is immensely fortunate to have so many dedicated and talented journalists delivering outstanding reportage to the public. The Irish Journalism Awards pay tribute to this work, for which we, as a society, are deeply grateful. The Google News Initiative is proud to play a role in ensuring the Irish media ecosystem continues to flourish.

23 category awards were announced, and the prestigious overall Journalist of the Year award was presented to Mark Tighe and Marie Croww of the Irish Independent. Announcing the Journalist of the Year winner for 2024, on behalf of the members of the independent judging panel, Claire Grady, Chair of the Judging Panel, said that: “Today’s winners represent the best of journalism in Ireland today…..important stories, insightful analysis, gripping commentary, not forgetting the stories which entertain us and brighten our day. Many underscore the role of journalists as watchdogs in our society.”
