Following an international competitive pitch, the Dublin-based public relations Wilson Hartnell has been appointed by The R&A as its public relations advisor for The 148th Open, which will be held in Royal Portrush Golf Club from 15th to 22nd July, 2019.
Marking a historic return to the island of Ireland, golf’s original and most international Major Championship returns after almost 70 years. Labelled by Jack Nicklaus as the “Championship for all of Golf, for all of time”, the 2019 Championship will mark the second time that The Open has been held outside of Scotland and England, the first being the previous staging at Portrush in 1951.
One of golf’s four Major Championships and the only one staged outside the USA, the 148th Open is the first time that the Championship will be an all-ticketed event. In 2012, Portrush hosted the Irish Open, which was a sell-out. It is expected that The 148th Open will follow suit with thousands of people from all over the world expected to journey to Northern Ireland during the Championship.
According to Sarah O’Connor, head of sports marketing & sponsorship at Wilson Hartnell: “Wilson Hartnell’s sports business is built on a brilliant understanding and passion for sport. Partnering with The R&A on golf’s most prestigious Major Championship and one of the world’s oldest and biggest sporting events, is thrilling. WH has a proven track record in developing effective sports campaigns and running large scale events that drive business performance. We are delighted to be working with The R&A to ensure that the return of The Open to the island of Ireland is an unprecedented success.”
