Aertv, the subsidiary of telecommunications company Magnet has launched a new mobile app that gives consumers free access to all the broadcast channels in Ireland on the go.
This is the first time that RTE and TV3 will be together in an app that is available without having to subscribe to a paid service. Aertv, which recently announced a 140% growth in viewership in the first half of 2013, is watched by viewers in 159 countries.
Aertv’s existing online TV platform currently offers Irish terrestrial channels for free on its basic package with consumers able to access up to 26 channels including premium channels, such as BBC, on Aertv Plus for €5.99 per month. These packages are now accessible on the iPad and iPhone app with free download from the iTunes store. Magnet Broadband customers can also access up to 34 channels, including MTV and Comedy Central, through the new Aertv app.
Philippe Brodeur, director of Aertv said, “media is changing and Aertv is helping to drive that change. From our establishment, we have viewed the development of Apps as being an important part of the strategy;  it’s what our users really want and we are very excited to be able to deliver on our promise now. With 3,000,000 already accessing us on a browser, we think our mobile penetration can take Aertv to a whole new level.
“Consumers are increasingly using mobile devices for accessing their own TV experience and in this price conscious marketplace, many are abandoning pay-TV subscription packages and opting for cheaper “over-the-top” online streaming services such as Aertv and Netflix. The launch of this app is a great addition for consumers. At home, on the go, everyone even cavemen can use the new Aertv app.”
In addition to offering content from other domestic and international channels, Aertv has broadcast original content on its own channels including Aertv Sport and Aertv music. The Gathering Channel, which Aertv has operated in association with The Gathering has helped to grow a global audience for the service.
