In aid of Cancer Awareness Week, the Irish Examiner has brought together a number of well-known celebrities, sports stars and specialists to highlight cancer and the steps people can take to check for early signs and symptoms. As part of the week-long campaign, columnists Ronan O’Gara, Darina Allen, Anthony Daly and Colm O’Regan stripped off to encourage people to take the time to check for any early signs of cancer and throughout the week – across digital and print- it featured the personal stories of those with cancer.
The genesis of the campaign came from the Irish Examiner’s creative agency. The managing director of Chemistry, Ray Sheerin, is a cancer survivor himself and knows first hand the importance of early detection. “Within certain age groups — particularly with older men, for example, there is still a very big incidence of people presenting themselves to doctors too late, he points out.
“The way around this is to get more people talking about it and being aware of what to look out for. That’s one of the areas that Examine Yourself is particularly strong on, because once people know what it is that they need to be looking for, there are certain cancers which will have manifestations and enable people to detect themselves, and take the next steps.”
CUH Charity, Cork University Hospital sponsored this extensive campaign which included print, digital, social and content. This awareness campaign was an opportunity for CUH Charity, Cork University Hospital to demonstrate their commitment to saving and changing lives of the community and the promotion of services and facilities for patients.
The Irish Cancer Society, the national charity for cancer care and the leading provider of all information relating to cancer prevention, detection, treatment and support were the content partners for the Let’s Talk Cancer Booklet. Today Friday, September 27, the paper also published a “Feelgood” special cancer edition and a 36 page Let’s Talk Cancer booklet.
