A total of 1,200 entries were received by News Brands Ireland for this year’s Journalism Awards which will be held on November 3rd in Dublin’s Mansion House.
This is a 50% increase in the number of entries compared to 2013, the last time the awards were held and this year’s event will be sponsored by the National Lottery.
“Now that the awards are back, we are delighted not just by the volume of entries but by the outstanding quality of work submitted,” says Vincent Crowley, chairman News Brands Ireland.
“As a snapshot of how our industry is faring, I think a total of 1200 entries shows the dedication and diversity that Irish journalism represents today,” he adds.
“We are lucky to have a sponsor of the calibre of the National Lottery to help us in relaunching this key industry event,” he added. “I wish all entrants good luck and look forward to seeing them at the awards in November.”
According to Dermot Griffin, chief executive of Premier Lotteries Ireland, operator of the National Lottery, “we are delighted to be supporting the 2016 Journalism awards. There has never been as much news produced as there is today, and in Ireland we access more than most, so it is absolutely fitting that we recognise the men and women who work around the clock to deliver the highest quality journalism.”
The closing date for entries has now passed and the 1200 submissions are being assessed by the 32-strong judging panel – comprising national journalists and editors – under the chairmanship of Professor John Horgan, former Press Ombudsman of Ireland.
